From Die Nadel, story III. Translated from the German original: Kurz bevor die Nadel sprang, wurde es an Bord immer still.

At a glance

Eine KI träumt is a collection of five German-language science-fiction stories by Dirk Gerber. They began on 5 October 2026 as a conversation with an AI during a car ride. How it began

The stories began on 5 October 2026, in the car. A conversation with an AI turned into worlds, people and questions that would not let go.

What came out of that drive is the framework. Dirk is now writing each story out into a long narrative of around 8,000 words, and he decides what goes in. The physics is not explained in boxes. It happens to the characters, as part of the plot.

How the runners fly

Two chalk dots on a cloth. Fold it until the dots lie on top of each other, and push a needle through.

Reading sample: Die Nadel

Long version finished · around 7,700 words

The runners’ ships do not cross space, they fold it. In the fold, hours pass for Rix. Outside, years go by.

The ship speaks with the calm voice of Lot. And while the stars draw together in front of the bow, Rix thinks of Mila, with whom he grew up on Varen.

Questions

When will Eine KI träumt be published?

There is no date yet. The stories are being expanded one by one; Die Nadel is finished as a long version. If you write to hello@gerber.media, you’ll get a message when it is out.

Is there an English version?

The stories are written in German, and the book and audiobook are planned in German.

What part did the AI play?

The stories began as a conversation with an AI on a car ride. Dirk Gerber writes them out into long narratives and decides what stays in the final text.

Is it science or fiction?

Science fiction. Real physics, such as time running slower deep in a gravitational field, is part of what happens to the characters instead of being explained.
